Public outcry as details reveal Meru Governor’s expenditure of Sh903.2M on foreign trips

Once more, Kawira Mwangaza, the embattled governor of Meru, is under fire for spending Sh903.20 million on foreign travel during the years 2023–2024, as per an audit report.

Records of the Meru County Treasury reveal that during the period, expenditure on domestic travel amounted to Kshs 342.00 million and comprised Kshs 182.11 million spent by the County Assembly and Kshs 159.89 million by the County Executive.

The report further shows that the expenditure on foreign travel amounted to Kshs 43.75 million and comprised Kshs 42.84 million by the County Assembly and Kshs 903.20 million by the County Executive.

The report sampled various destinations by the County Assembly and displayed how the County Assembly spent their funds.

These included destinations to Australia (Ksh.1.6 million), Tanzania (Ksh.1 million), Dubai (Ksh.1 million), Kampala (Ksh.2.5 million) among others.

In total, the County Assembly went to Arusha in Tanzania 14 times and spent a total of Ksh.28 million.
